In Memoriam: Roger Barry


Roger Barry, a longtime faculty member, colleague, and friend to many, passed away March 19, 2018 at the age of 82. He contributed enormously to the cryosphere community as a scientist, prolific author, and teacher. He was the founder of the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) and director for more than 30 years.

Roger had lifelong research interests ranging from polar climates to mountain climates to climate change. He was the author of hundreds of research papers and review articles and an avid author and co-author of textbooks, including The Global Cryosphere, Atmosphere Weather and Climate, Synoptic and Dynamic Climatology, Mountain Weather and Climate, and Microclimate and Local Climates. Roger was recognized around the world for both his scientific accomplishments and his service to the community.

Roger supervised 67 graduate students, 36 of whom received their PhD degrees.
