GCW data include basic measurements and higher-level products, both satellite and in situ. The network of GCW surface measurement sites is called CryoNet. The satellite observing system for the cryosphere is robust, as shown in the figure below. GCW is utilizing the many satellite products that exist in order to provide higher-level information and services.
Although there are many satellites and sensors that measure the cryosphere, not all methods for estimating snow, ice, and permafrost properties are mature. The list to the right gives a qualitative assessment of current capabilities for measuring the cryosphere from space.
development of satellite product "trackers", which are also useful for monitoring product quality;
facilitating, supporting, and devising best practices for product intercomparisons, both large scale and for focus areas;
providing data from various CryoNet sites for validation of satellite products. CryoNet sites can collectively provide the range of snow and ice conditions needed to validate satellite retrievals.
